CARING FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION: A GUIDE TO PRESERVATION

Displaying your photographs on your wall allows you to showcase memories and artistic works, but proper care is essential to ensure they remain undamaged for years to come. Here are key steps to preserve your photographic collection:

1. Choose the right location

Avoid direct sunlight

UV rays can cause your photographs to face and deteriorate overtime.  Place your art in shaded areas or use a UV-filtering glass in frames.

Control Temperature & Humidity

Heat and moisture fluctuations can cause warping, mould or discoloration. Keep your photos in a stable environment, avoid hanging them near radiators, fireplaces or air vents.

2. Use Archival-Quality Materials

Frames

Choose acid-free mats and backings to prevent deterioration. Wood frames should be sealed or lines with archival barriers. Buying your artwork from Hess Art House means you will receive the best quality materials, as we use Hanemühle Paper and gallery-quality frames

Glass or Acrylic Protection

Museum grade glass with UV protection or acrylic (Perspex) help photos shield from dust and light. If you opt for acrylic, be aware it can attract more dust due to static electricity.

3. Handle with Care

Clean Hands or Gloves

Oils and dirt from hands can damage photos over time. Wear cotton gloves or handle them by the edges with clean hands.

Avoid excessive cleaning

Use a microfibre cloth for light dusting. Avoid liquid cleaners directly on the glass, as it can allow moisture into the frame

4. Secure Mounting

Hanging Technique

Avoid adhesive strips directly on the frames, as it can potentially fall over time. Use sturdy picture hooks to support the weight of your framed art and make sure they are properly levelled.

Check for stability

Inspecting periodically the frames and wall mounts can ensure the safety and levelling of your photographs.

5. Rotate Displays

If one your photos is exposed to light regularly, consider rotating it with another to reduce long exposure. Helping maintain quality while refreshing your display.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your photographic collection remains well preserved for generations to come.
